RAD Meeting

Tonight we discussed “Forgive my Fins” by Tera Lynn Childs.

I must say we LOVED this book. Several of us read it in one or two days. We couldn’t put it down. It was very “Ten things I hate about you”. One of the main characters reminded a couple of us of Heath Ledger.  This is one that the club would recommend to all.

 THE STORY

Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it’s not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but when you’re half human, half mermaid, like Lily, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.

Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid—she’s a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been living on land and going to Seaview High School ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems—like her obnoxious biker-boy neighbor, Quince Fletcher—but it has that one major perk: Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type—the instant they “bond,” it’s for life.

When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily ever after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.

This book was honored on the 2011 Lone Star Reading List.

Tera’s Bio

Image

Tera Lynn Childs is a newly discovered species of authorfish that always dreamed of being a mermaid, but never got closer than a career as a competitive swimmer. Loves to spend as much time as possible in and around water, right up until her fingertips turn all pruney, in the vain hope that one day her legs will magically turn into fins. When stuck on land, you can findAuthora neo writing in coffee shops across the country, prowling for cool mermaid gear on Etsy, and spending way too much time online.

Tera is the author of the RITA Award–winning book Oh. My. Gods., and its sequel, Goddess Boot Camp, about a cross-country-running California girl struggling to find her place at a school for the descendants of Greek gods. Her new series about a half-mermaid princess who goes to high school on the mainland begins with Forgive My Fins.

After moving around a lot (a LOT) growing up, Tera is currently nomadic and looking for a place to settle down with her adorable Dalmatian mix, Daisy.

Tera has also won these awards for another book:

Oh. My. Gods.—Romance Writers of America RITA Award, 2009

Oh. My. Gods.—Texas Library Association Tayshas High School Reading List, 2010

Oh. My. Gods.—Georgia Peach Book Award for Teen Readers, 2009
